Lecture in Litchfield
Friday, May 9, 5:30 p.M.

Free, please mention that you are a Hog River Journal subscriber

Please join us on Friday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. for a lecture by furniture expert Tom Kugelman on “Collecting Today.”  This is the inaugural lecture in a four-part series relating to Litchfield Historical Society’s new exhibition To Please Any Taste: Litchfield County Furniture and Furniture Makers, 1780-1830 and is sponsored in part by HRJ in celebration of its 5th anniversary.  Between 1780 and 1830 Litchfield County experienced a surge in industry, agriculture, and regional and international trade.  The citizens of this region expected their homes, clothing, and furnishings to reflect their newfound success.  Furniture makers responded, creating pieces that both reflected the desires of the client and the regional aesthetics of the craftsman; in the process, they created a unique regional style of furniture. The exhibition will include more than 30 examples of Litchfield County furniture from the Litchfield Historical Society’s collection, the Yale University Art Gallery, Connecticut Historical Society Museum, Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, Hartford Steam Boiler Insurance Co., and many other institutions and private lenders.

The lecture series will be held May 9 at St. Michael’s Church Hall, two doors down from the museum, with a reception at the museum after the lecture.  To Please Any Taste: Litchfield County Furniture and Furniture Makers, 1780-1830 will be on view April 19 to November 23, 2008.  For more information call (860) 567-4501 or visit www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org.
